Ebook About An estranged brother is forced to return to his home and face up to his past.Malcolm Gage walked out of his brother’s life sixteen years ago when they both wanted to marry the same woman. Malcolm lost that battle, and he’s never forgiven his brother for it, preferring to live in poverty as a schoolmaster rather than swallow his pride and go home. But now an unusual condition in a will pushes him back into the family fold. If he can teach his nephew well enough to admit him to the Society of Gentleman Linguists, he will inherit a fortune and will never be poor again. The only catch — he has to stay under his brother’s roof for three months. But there’s an unexpected benefit to his return to Great Maeswood, in the delightful shape of Marie Fournier, a French lady’s maid. She speaks no English, and no one else in the village has bothered to get to know her. But Malcolm sees in her a kindred spirit, another outsider, and recruits her to help him with his teaching. As he gets to know her better, however, he begins to wonder if she’s all she seems to be…This is a complete story with a happy ever after. Book 2 of a 6 book series. A traditional Regency romance, drawing room rather than bedroom.Book Stranger at the Grove (Strangers Book 2) Review :
I encountered Mary Kingswood’s books several years ago, and they continue to delight. This series is no different.I am not one for spoilers, so let’s just say that the writing is lovely (old-fashioned-ish, but so fun!), the characters varied and sometimes eccentric (the investigative threesome are my favorites, as they follow us from series to series), the plots take many unexpected turns (I didn’t figure this mystery out at all!), and the stories romantic and clean. I will be looking forward to the next in the series.I did receive a pre-release copy in exchange for this review. To my embarrasment, this review is overdue...by a year. Stranger at the Grove is the 24th title by Ms. Kingswood that I've read over this pandemic period, and this review will apply to them all. (Anyone desiring more details about Stranger at the Grove has only to peruse the accompanying blurb.)The bottom line is that I have found all Ms. Kingswood's books unfailingly delightful. Each is a complete, satisfying regency. At the same time, within that genre they are much more. They emcompass an amazing variety of settings, social strata, and worthwhile sub-plots: titled classes, townspeople, servants, the professions, many of them within their own environments, from castles to hovels, stables, farms, parsonages, mills, a race horse breeding operation, all convincingly rendered.Foreign lands are also occasional venues: European, Egyptian, and Indian, to name three. Only America and Australia are mentioned in passing (so far as I know). There are even maps and genealogies available online for those who wish to fill out locations and interrelationships. For me, however, the chiefest delights are in the vast panoply of characters, each with distinct, unique, memorable, many-sided personalities. Even now, after two dozen stories, I could rattle off descriptions of ten or fifteen characters, a rare situation for me. (The "tiger lady" would be near the top.)It's not unusual for the serious reader to find an occasional off-note in a book. I've found none in this collection: the reading is always smooth and comfortable. I've read several series out of order, which was not a problem. (I look forward to rereading them in order eventually.)Finally, the accompanying website is managed uncommonly well and is informative. I even like the covers, which are period-perfect.
